Moon rocks, chunks of Mars on auction block in New York

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Several lumps of Mars and the biggest piece of the Moon ever offered for sale were unveiled on Sunday in New York in what organizers described as history's largest meteorite auction.

More than 125 meteorites were being auctioned in the private sale, including an iron meteorite resembling a howling face that was found in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa and a slice of the Willamette meteorite from the American Museum of Natural History, estimated to sell for at least $85,000. The 4-pound (1.8-kg) Moon rock was expected to go for more than $340,000.

"We cover a very, very wide spectrum of material," said Darryl Pitt, the meteorite consultant for Heritage Auctions, which is conducting the sale.

Some pieces were expected to be available for just a few hundred dollars.

"We wanted to make certain there's something for everyone. We want to be egalitarian when we're offering outer space," Pitt told Reuters.

Meteorites are priced for their size, rarity, beauty and provenance -- buyers are typically willing to pay more for bits of rock or iron known to have originated on the Moon or Mars. Lunar meteorites are particularly rare, he said, with only about 135 pounds (61.2 kg) of the rock known to exist on Earth.

"It is the oldest material mankind can touch, the raw ingredients of the planets," Pitt said in describing the appeal of collecting meteorites.

Other lots for sale included a large fragment of the Tissint meteorite of Martian origin that fell only last year in Morocco and a chunk of the Peekskill meteorite that was caught on video cameras 20 years ago burning through the sky before smacking into a Chevy Malibu parked in the town about 50 miles north of New York City.

Do black people support Obama because he's black?

Surviving slavery, segregation and discrimination has forged a special pride in African-Americans. Now some are saying this hard-earned pride has become prejudice in the form of blind loyalty to President Barack Obama.

Are black people supporting Obama mainly because he's black? If race is just one factor in blacks' support of Obama, does that make them racist? Can blacks' support for Obama be compared with white voters who may favor his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, because he's white?

These questions have long animated conservatives who are frustrated by claims that white people who oppose Obama's policies are racist. This week, when a black actress who tweeted an endorsement of Romney was subjected to a stream of abuse from other African-Americans, the politics of racial accusation came full circle once again.

Stacey Dash, who also has Mexican heritage, is best known for the 1995 film "Clueless" and the recent cable-TV drama "Single Ladies." On Twitter, she was called "jigaboo," ''traitor," ''house nigger" and worse after posting, "Vote for Romney. The only choice for your future."

The theme of the insults: A black woman would have to be stupid, subservient or both to choose a white Republican over the first black president.

Russell Simmons, the hip-hop mogul and Obama backer, called Dash's experience "racism." Said Barbara Walters on "The View": "If she were white, this wouldn't have happened."

Twitter users are by no means representative of America, and many black Obama supporters quickly denounced the attacks. But for people like Art Gary, an information technology professional, the reason Dash was attacked is simple: She is a black woman supporting a white candidate over a black one.

"It goes both ways," said Gary, who is white. "There is racial bias amongst whites, and there is racial bias amongst blacks. But as far as the press is concerned, it only goes one way."

Antonio Luckett, a sales representative in Milwaukee who is black, called the attacks on Dash unfair. But when people speak out against a symbol of black progress like Obama, he said, "African-Americans tend to be internally hurt by that."

"We still have a civil rights (era) mentality, but we're not living in a civil rights-based world anymore," he said. "We want to say, 'You're black, you need to stand behind black people.'"

Luckett said one reason he voted for Obama in the 2008 primary against Hillary Clinton was because Obama is black: "Yes, I will admit that."

Is that racism? Not in Luckett's mind. "It's voting for someone who would understand your side of the coin a lot better."

Such logic runs into trouble when applied to a white person voting for Romney because he understands whiteness better. Ron Christie, a black conservative who worked for former President George W. Bush, finds both sides of that coin unacceptable.

"It's not the vision that our leaders in the civil rights movement would have envisioned and be proud of in the era of the first African-American president," Christie said.

Martin Luther King Jr. fought Jim Crow laws, which deprived blacks of political rights after Reconstruction, upheld by Southern Democrats. But black voters switched after Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson pushed through the 1960s civil rights legislation and Republicans successfully pursued the votes of white people who disliked the civil rights agenda.

Since then, Democrats have persistently wooed black voters with programs and platforms that African-Americans favor, and the party has been rewarded every four years.

Clinton got 83 percent of the black vote in 1992 and 84 percent in 1996; the third-party candidate Ross Perot probably sliced away some of Clinton's black support. Al Gore got 90 percent in 2000; John Kerry got 88 percent in 2004. Obama captured 95 percent in 2008, and 2 million more black people voted than in the previous election.

Christie says he, too, shares the sense of pride in Obama smashing what for blacks is the ultimate glass ceiling. He understands that black pride springs from a shared history of being treated as less than human, while the history of pride in whiteness has a racist context.

But he still sees black people voting for Obama out of a "straitjacket solidarity."

Christie sees it in his barbershop, where black men shifted from calling candidate Obama "half-white" and "not one of us" to demanding that Christie stop opposing the first black president.

He sees it in the comments of radio host Tom Joyner, who told his millions of listeners a year ago, "Let's not even deal with facts right now. Let's deal with our blackness and pride ? and loyalty. . I'm not afraid or ashamed to say that as black people, we should do it because he's a black man."

The actor Samuel L. Jackson said much the same thing: "I voted for Barack because he was black," he told Ebony magazine. "Cuz that's why other folks vote for other people ? because they look like them."

In 2011, as black unemployment continued to rise, the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus said that if Clinton was still president, "we probably would be still marching on the White House . (but) nobody wants to do anything that would empower the people who hate the president."

And just last week, the rapper Snoop Dogg posted a list of voting reasons, written by someone else, on a social media account. No. 1 on his pro-Obama list: He's black. Snoop's top reason to not vote for Romney: He's white.

All of this may help explain why Veronica Scott-Miller, a junior at historically black Hampton University, directed the following tweet at Dash: "You get a lil money and you forget that you're black and a woman. Two things Romney hates."

In an interview, Scott-Miller said the GOP fought Obama's effort to provide funding for historically black colleges like hers. She dislikes Romney's opposition to abortion and thinks Republicans have a "negative stigma about us . they make generalizations in their speeches about our race in general, and they make up terms like welfare queens and stuff."

Told that some saw her tweet as racist, she said that's not what she meant. "I was saying that as a black woman, Romney doesn't have that much that would make us want to vote for him," said Scott-Miller, who is black. "Because Barack Obama lives with three black women in his house, he knows about what they need, he knows about the issues we may be facing, he talks to black women on the regular."

Sherrilyn Ifill, a law professor at the University of Maryland, wrote a column last week exploring why so many black voters are rejecting Romney. She said it has less to do with the candidate than with his party's treatment of Obama, such as John Sununu calling the president "lazy" after the debate, a congressman shouting "You lie!" during the State of the Union address, claims that Obama is not a citizen and more.

In an interview, Ifill said that for black voters, such accusations feel like white people are attacking their own dignity. "In essence," she says, "they are closing ranks around Obama."

She noted that women were justifiably moved by Hillary Rodham Clinton's candidacy and Catholics flocked to the polls to elect President John F. Kennedy. Comparing black pride in Obama to white pride in Romney is a "false symmetry" because of the history of black oppression, she says, and she asked for patience from America at large.

"There should not be this resistance to pride over the first black president," Ifill says. "If we get to the fifth one, I'll be with you."

Scientists identify mammal model of bladder regeneration

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? While it is well known that starfish, zebrafish and salamanders can re-grow damaged limbs, scientists understand very little about the regenerative capabilities of mammals. Now, researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center's Institute for Regenerative Medicine report on the regenerative process that enables rats to re-grow their bladders within eight weeks.

In PLOS ONE, a peer-reviewed, online publication, the scientists characterize this unique model of bladder regeneration with the goal of applying what they learn to human patients.

"A better understanding of the regenerative process at the molecular and cellular level is a key to more rapid progress in applying regenerative medicine to help patients," said George Christ, Ph.D., senior researcher and professor of regenerative medicine at Wake Forest Baptist.

In a previous study by Christ's team, research in rats showed that when about 75 percent of the animals' bladders were removed, they were able to regenerate a complete functional bladder within eight weeks. The current study focused on how the regeneration occurs.

"There is very little data on the mechanisms involved in organ regeneration in mammals," said Christ. "To our knowledge, bladder regeneration holds a unique position -- there is no other mammalian organ capable of this type of regeneration."

The ability of the liver to grow in size when lobes are removed is sometimes referred to as regeneration, but this is a misnomer, said co-author Bryon Petersen, Ph.D., who was a professor of regenerative medicine at Wake Forest Baptist during the period the research occurred. Instead, through a proliferation of cells, the remaining tissue grows to compensate for the lost size. In contrast, the hallmark of true regeneration is following nature's "pattern" to exactly duplicate size, form and function, Petersen said.

"If we can understand the bladder's regenerative process, the hope is that we can prompt the regeneration of other organs and tissues where structure is important -- from the intestine and spinal cord to the heart," said Petersen.

The current study showed that the animals' bodies responded to injury by increasing the rate at which certain cells divided and grew. The most notable proliferative response occurred initially in the urothelium, the layer of tissue that lines the bladder.

As the proliferative activity in the bladder lining waned, it continued elsewhere: in the fibrous band (lamina propria) that separates the bladder lining from the bladder muscles and in the bladder muscle itself.

The researchers have several theories about how the process works, said Christ. One possibility is that cells in the bladder lining transition and become a type of stem cell that can proliferate throughout the bladder. Other theories are that cells in the bladder lining signal other cells to replicate and that injury prompts stem cells to arrive through the blood stream to repair the bladder damage.

In future studies, the scientists will work to identify the exact regenerative process and will expand the work into mice. The ability to breed mice that lack specific genes will enable the team to explore how genes and proteins may affect the regenerative process and possibly help identify therapies to prompt regeneration.

The research was supported by the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases under award number R21DK081832.

Co-researchers were Charles C. Peyton, M.D., lead author, David Burmeister, Ph.D., and Karl-Erik Andersson, M.D., Ph.D., of Wake Forest Baptist. Peterson is now at the University of Florida and an adjunct professor at Wake Forest Baptist.

Google is such a powerful search engine that it?s become a verb. Need an answer? Google it. So, when people Google your industry, service or product- do they find you or your competitors? Do potential customers find your website when they search for your product or service? If you don?t think that having a strong internet presence is important, check out these facts:

    • About ?97% of searches start online
    • There are over 400,000 searches per minute with a geo-targeted term
    • There is an 80%+ intent to buy when someone performs a local search
    • The majority of people do not look beyond page one for their results

If you do not have a web presence, you are losing out on all the customers that begin their search online. When searching, there are generally three different kinds of results that appear. The first are sponsored results or Pay-Per-Click (PPC) ads. They are usually at the very top and also down the right hand side of the page. If you have a PPC ad, then you pay each time a user clicks on your ad, regardless of whether or not they buy from you.

If the search term was a geo-targeted term (For instance? Business+City Name or Zip Code), then you will also see local search results. These are called Google Plus Local Listings, previously known as Google Places. The largest portion of results is generally the ?organic? results. Sites that have the strongest search engine optimization (SEO) will have higher rankings in the search engines than those who don?t. Each page can only display a certain number of results. Keeping in mind that most users don?t? look beyond page one, it is supremely important to be listed here. If you want to be in one of those spots, you need to outwork the competition.

    Financial Steps In Your Forties

Your fortieth birthday is a good opportunity to take stock of life, including your financial life. Many people have achieved, or made plans to achieve, various milestones?getting married, buying a home, starting a family or preparing for the kids? education. Now it?s time to look ahead. Your future financial success will rise from the bedrock of the careful planning you do now. Let?s look at three important areas?income protection, estate planning and your vision of financial independence.

    Protect Your Income
One of your most valuable assets is your ?human capital??that is, the present value of your potential future wages. At age 40, you likely have significant years of prime earning potential ahead of you. Protecting your future wages is critical, and that protection includes disability insurance. If you have disability coverage through your employer, it may not be enough to cover essential expenses, so consider a supplemental policy.

Umbrella insurance is a line of protection that?s often overlooked. It is a second layer of liability coverage that would kick in after home and auto insurance in the event you were sued. For example, let?s say a judgment were issued against you for $2 million and your home and auto insurance only provided $800,000 in personal liability coverage. An umbrella policy could potentially cover you for the balance of $1.2 million. Umbrella insurance is relatively inexpensive, and well worth the peace of mind.

    Estate Planning Basics
Estate planning can potentially involve trusts and other complex strategies, but don?t neglect the basics of any estate plan?your will and power of attorney. Update your will to reflect changes in federal or state legislation, your choice of beneficiaries, the titling of assets and any other change in circumstances.

A general power of attorney is important to have in place so that if you become incapable of making financial decisions, a family member or trusted associate can do so on your behalf. Be sure to check with banks and other institutions to make sure that the power of attorney you have drafted will be accepted without question.

    Your Vision Of Independence
At age 40, retirement may sound like a distant prospect. Think of it instead as financial independence and start thinking about it now. Envision a future in which you can leave your job, change careers, volunteer, spend time with family or whatever you want to do when you can do as you please.

After you imagine the ?what? of independence, look to the ?when?, ?where? and ?how?. When you retire may depend on how much you save and how you invest that savings, so careful planning is in order. Think about where you?ll enjoy your retirement and where you?ll live so you can understand the living expenses you?ll incur. Lastly, consider how you?ll live and the type of lifestyle you want once your working days have ended.

These financial plans, made early and wisely, can significantly affect your financial future.

Steve Liesman Interviews Erskine Bowles And ... - Business Insider

    CNBC screenshot

The big event on CNBC today was Steve Liesman interviewing Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, Erskine Bowles, and former Alan Simpson on the fiscal cliff and the deficit.

Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson are the duo behind the eponymous "Eskine-Bowles" debt reduction plan that many folks on both sides of the aisle in DC think is a fabulous framework.

Steve Liesman is CNBC's top-notch economics reporter, who frequently gets flak from Rick Santelli and the internet, because he doesn't knee-jerk hate the Fed, and buy into a lot of popular nonsense.

And it's because Liesman is such a smart guy that he performed the best Simpson-Bowles interview of anyone yet.

See usually, when Bowles and Simpson appear somewhere, they're mostly given softballs that accept the premise of their charge, that the biggest crisis in the economy is the national debt, and that their "pox on both their houses" message is right on. Nobody ever seems to question whether it makes sense for Washington to be spending so much time talking about deficit reduction at a time of 7.8% unemployment and ultra-low borrowing costs.

And yet! That's exactly what Liesman did.

For example, here's a question that almost never gets asked, but which Liesman asked today to Alan Simpson:

Senator, it's hard to look at a 1.6% yield on the 10-year right now to see the money that floods into the U.S. Treasury market any time there's concern about anything in the world and say, you know what? "The deficit's the big problem right now."

Alan Simpson was forced to follow that up with a cliche and then a falsehood...

"Well, we're the healthiest horse in the glue factory... the trajectory of debt, deficit and interest in
this country is exactly the same as the PIIGS countries. except we're lots bigger."

As noted, the glue factory line is just an old cliche (along with cleanest dirty shirt, etc.) and the trajectory of debt, deficits, and interest is not at all the same as in the PIIGS countries.

As Martin Wolf and others pointed out, Spain was running a surplus pre-crisis. It's just a myth that they had some history of fiscal irresponsibility.

PIIGS fiscal profiles aren't comparable to US ones in any way.

Liesman didn't let up, and continued to point out how there was no economic evidence that the national debt is an issue. Very refreshing.

Later on though, Liesman asked a more subtle question...

Lloyd, there's a school of thought that what the fed is doing, buying treasuries, enables the deficit spending that's going on in Washington. do you subscribe to that?

This question is kind of designed to challenge shibboleth that can expose how people think about US fiscal economics.

It was kind of unfortunate that the question was directed to Lloyd, who took an politics-free middle-ground answer... it would have been nice to get a direct response from Simpson and Bowles on this question, as claiming that the Fed enables "reckless spending" is a myth.

After a period of more doom talk from Bowles, Liesman turned to Blankfein again and asked:

"Lloyd, to listen to the situation as laid out by misters bowles and simpson, you wouldn't think we'd have a stock market at an all-time high. if things are in such bad condition, why is the market as it is?"

Blankfein answered that it had a lot to do with interest rates and dividends, but Liesman hung on and pressed on this point about reconciling all this doom and gloom about the debt and the fiscal cliff with the relative confidence of the market. At one point, one of them answered that the market is pricing in a big deal (which seems dubious).

Liesman wasn't out to be confrontational, but it was incredibly refreshing to hear all three of these men interviewed by someone with some real chops on the issue that wasn't going to accept every premise.

You can watch the video here.

Lay Hands on Your Spouse: It Says "I Got You!" | Black and Married ...

It?s a simple yet powerful act of oneness ?laying hands on your spouse. My husband swears that I have ?magic hands.? Before we married, I laid hands on him a lot ?the ear, neck, and hands, primarily. It was sensual not sexual (at least for me). Most of the times I did it unintentionally, and when I would stop, he?d beg for more. ?That?s one of the reasons I fell in love with you,? he says.

My husband lays hands on me too but for a different reason. When I am sick, he touches the affected area of my body and prays for healing. The best part is that I don?t have to ask. One moment I?m in pain and the next I?m resting peaceful.

There is a power transfer when spouses lay hands on each other for companionship, for pleasure, for healing, for bonding, for relaxation, for anointing, and so much more. A spouse?s hands say, ?I got you!?

If there is strength you need right now, ?I got you.?

If there is healing you need right now, ?I got you.?

If there is deliverance from the enemy you need right now, ?I got you.?

If there is confidence you need right now, ?I got you.?

If you just need a reminder that you are loved beyond measure, ?I got you.?

?Relax and receive the power God has given me as your husband/wife. There?s nothing to worry about, sweetheart, because I got you and God?s got us.?

It doesn?t require any money to lay hands on your spouse. Just time, faith, and love. Believe for whatever it is you are transferring through your hands. Pray for it, and pray for each other. And then watch God work through the simple yet powerful act of laying hands.

BMWK family, do you believe in laying hands on your spouse?

Sarah Sheffer reports.

Mo, whose popular, sprawling, bawdy tales bring to life rural China, is the first Chinese winner of the literature prize who is not a critic of the authoritarian government. And Thursday's announcement by the Swedish Academy brought an explosion of pride across Chinese social media.

The state-run national broadcaster, China Central Television, reported the news moments later, and the official writers' association, of which?Mo?is a vice chairman, lauded the choice. But it also ignited renewed criticisms of?Mo?from other writers as too willing to serve or too timid to confront a government that heavily censors artists and authors, and punishes those who refuse to obey.

The reactions highlight the unusual position?Mo?holds in Chinese literature. He is a genuinely popular writer who is embraced by the Communist establishment but who also dares, within careful limits, to tackle controversial issues like forced abortion. His novel "The Garlic Ballads," which depicts a peasant uprising and official corruption, was banned.

"He's one of those people who's a bit of a sharp point for the Chinese officials, yet manages to keep his head above water," said his longtime U.S. translator, Howard Goldblatt of the University of Notre Dame. "That's a fine line to walk, as you can imagine."

Typical of his ability to skirt the censors' limitations,?Mo?had retreated from Beijing in recent days to the rural eastern village of Gaomi where he was raised and which is the backdrop for much of his work. He greeted the prize with characteristic low-key indifference.

"Whether getting it or not, I don't care," the 57-year-old?Mo?said in a telephone interview with CCTV from Gaomi. He said he goes to his childhood hometown every year around this time to read, write and visit his elderly father.

"I'll continue on the path I've been taking, feet on the ground, describing people's lives, describing people's emotions, writing from the standpoint of the ordinary people," said?Mo, whose real name is Guan Moye and whose pen name "Mo?Yan" means "don't speak." He chose the name while writing his first novel to remind himself to hold his tongue and stay out of trouble.

The state media hoopla and government cheer contrasted with the last Nobel prizes given to Chinese. Beijing disowned China-born French emigre dramatist, novelist and government critic Gao Xingjian when in 2000 he became the only other Chinese writer to win the literary prize.

After imprisoned democracy campaigner Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Peace Prize two years ago, the government heaped scorn on the award as a tool of the West and put diplomatic and economic relations with Norway, which awards the prize, into a chill.
