Apple and Google Success in Kodak Patents

kodak

Apple and Google have been successful in acquiring the rights to Kodak?s patents.

Kodak filed for bankruptcy in early 2012. Part of the new restructuring of the new company was to sell off its imaging patent portfolio. Both Apple and Google had made separate bids for the patents which were below what Kodak seemed. However as part of a new co-operative licensing group known as Intellectual Ventures and RPX Corporation the two companies bid of $525 million was accepted by Kodak.

Kodak CEO Antonio Perez says the sale will let the company ?repay a substantial amount of our initial [bankruptcy financing] loan, satisfy a key condition for our new financing facility, and position our Commercial Imaging business for further growth and success.?

In addition to the sale,it is hoped that as part of the agreement, the patent suits against Kodak by Apple and others will be settled.

Bloomberg?confirms?that Apple and Google were among the parties buying the patents, as were RIM, Samsung, Amazon, Facebook, Adobe, Fujifilm, Huawei, and HTC, according to a court filing. Many of these companies had legal tangles with Kodak, so this is a way of neutralizing the imaging patents that have now been licensed and settled.
