Reports: Lakers' Jerry Buss hospitalized for cancer

Lakers owner Jerry Buss has been hospitalized with an undisclosed form of cancer, the Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register are reporting. From the LA Times:

Lakers owner Jerry Buss has been hospitalized because of an undisclosed form of cancer, spending time in the intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, according to multiple team personnel.

A Lakers spokesman declined to comment on his condition.

Several current and former Lakers players have visited Buss, including Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Buss, 79, has been in the hospital numerous times the last two years. He underwent an undisclosed surgery last August and was admitted a month earlier for what the team said was dehydration. He was also hospitalized in December 2011 for blood clots in his leg caused by excessive travel, according to the Lakers.

Buss purchased the Lakers in 1979 and under his guidance the team has won 10 NBA championships, including five since 2000.

In recent years, his son Jim Buss has taken over control of the team, working more and more in tandem with GM Mitch Kupchak. Many were surprised control was not handed to daughter Jeanie Buss, who handles much of the Lakers' business side.

Buss purchased the team for a reported $67.5 million (the LA Times reports Buss also got the L.A. Kings and a ranch in the deal). This year Forbes magazine estimated the team's worth at more than $1 billion, thanks in part to the development of the LA Live! complex surrounding Staples Center.
