Aldermanic communications aide: The poor fella's first few days ...

Item: Aldermen to hire their own communications official this fall. If having a political boss is fun, having 14 political bosses must be 14 times as fun! Here?s how we imagine it would unfold in the pages of the lucky staffer?s diary.

Day 1: So excited to be starting work in Old City Hall, with our council! I have a good feeling it will be at least as exciting as my last role, in communications for the city?s Geographic Information and Geomatics branch. Fewer maps, though. Sigh.

Day 2: Ald. Richard Pootmans (he?s really tall!) gave me my first task: proofreading his ward update and posting it to Calgary.ca. I would have taken out more of his references to ?win-win? initiatives, but there wouldn?t have been much left in the update.

Day 3: I?ve heard so much about Gian-Carlo Carra, and finally got to meet him, photos of his new son in tow. He talked about the video work he wants to do with me. And also something about the new urbanism, whatever that is.

Day 5: Andre Chabot came and asked if I can teach him how to ?get on that Facebook.? Surprised he isn?t using it already.

Aldermanic communications aide: The poor fellas first few days, imaginedDay 7: Today?s highlight ? ugh, yeah right ? was a lecture from Gord Lowe on the finer points of financial risk management. I didn?t even write the budget briefing note.

Day 8: Thank goodness Brian Pincott came by this afternoon to chat about my Folk Fest button. He saved me from Part 2 of Lowe?s financial risk lecture.

Day 10: I don?t think I?ve ever looked forward to a weekend this much.

Day 11: What capers Dale Hodges has been muttering about, I may never know. I wish he?d stop asking me to install Windows on his IBM 386 computer.

Day 12: Advised Shane Keating and Peter Demong against participating in a charity half-pipe skate-off at the McKenzie Towne skate park. Keating took more persuading.

Day 15: I thought Ray Jones told the newspaper he likely wouldn?t use the communications aide? Now he wants a communications strategy to deal with 13 cranky Temple homeowners whose road isn?t plowed yet. My snarky key message: ?Just wait a few more days. It?s October. It?s gonna melt.?

Day 17: The 311 call report for Ward 8 includes five different people praising John Mar for his attendance at a Shaganappi dog park opening. At least two of them sound suspiciously like John Mar in falsetto.

Day 19: I wrote in a news release that Gael MacLeod represents Coventry Hills, when that?s in Jim Stevenson?s ward. The amount of text she managed to fit onto that scolding sticky note was downright artful.

Aldermanic communications aide: The poor fellas first few days, imaginedDay 24: Polished up Diane Colley-Urquhart?s speaking notes for a tennis court groundbreaking. Her use of ?pause for laughter? and ?pause for applause? seems a tad optimistic.

Day 25: Attended the groundbreaking. It was more than a tad optimistic.

Day 27: I?ve taken up smoking to get a few more breaks. A good way to get to know Demong. He?s still somewhat bitter about my skateboarding advice.

Day 36: Chabot has asked me to investigate why he?s been blocked from Facebook. He?s now asking about Twitter; maybe it?s best that I beg off that task.

Day 40: Druh Farrell gave me an early Christmas present. A Peace Bridge T-shirt. Hey, that reminds me: I have a bunch of stuff for the Salvation Army dropbox.

Day 41: I forgot to put the phrase ?pause for effect? into parentheses in Pincott?s speech on sustainable homebuilding ? with very, very humorous results, the mayor?s staff tells me.

Day 46: I?ve trimmed down Gian-Carlo?s 4,000-word newsletter for the Ogden newsletter to nearly 1,500 ? but still about double the length they asked for.

Day 47: Inserted passage about new urbanism into Ogden newsletter essay, at GC?s request. Back at 2,500 words.

Aldermanic communications aide: The poor fellas first few days, imaginedDay 54: They?re called websites, Dale. Not ?Internet sites.? Gah.

Day 56: They?re called tweets, Jim. Not? I don?t even feel comfortable writing that in my diary.

Day 63: Two oil companies have called back for interviews, and four others still say they?re looking at my resum?. Fingers crossed.

With no concrete action in Europe, stocks slump

Traders and floor officials gather at a post on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange shortly after the beginning of trading, Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012. The market wavered between gains and losses for much of Wednesday, yanked around by technical problems, an ambiguous statement from the Federal Reserve, and mixed reports on U.S. companies that made it difficult to decipher just where the economy is headed. (AP Photo/Richard Drew)

(AP) ? The European Central Bank on Thursday gamely promised to keep tackling the continent's debt crisis. But the markets wanted much more.

Stocks sank across the U.S. and Europe, the euro fell against the dollar and investors dumped bonds issued by the governments of Spain and Italy. Investors had been expecting more immediate action from the ECB Bank and were disappointed by the plan's lack of details, especially considering the ECB president's pledge last week to do "whatever it takes" to keep the euro intact.

A week later, investors' response was more like: "whatever."

It was the second day in a row that markets were disappointed by a lack of decisive action from a major central bank. On Wednesday, stocks closed lower after the Federal Reserve made only vague promises about its plans for trying to revive the U.S. economy.

"It's more jawboning, it's more copy and paste from last week," said Kenny Polcari, managing director of the brokerage ICAP. "There was no definitive plan, and so all the hype and energy (Draghi) created last week is going to go down in flames today."

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 92.18 points to 12,878.88. The Dow had been down as much as 192 shortly after noon.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 10.14 to 1,365. The Nasdaq composite index lost 10.44 to 2,909.77.

It was the fourth day in a row of losses; U.S. stocks haven't risen since ECB President Mario Draghi's now-famous three-word promise one week ago. Friday could be another volatile day for the stock market. The Labor Department releases its closely watched monthly jobs report at 8:30 a.m.

Investors had been hoping for clear action from the ECB, such as a cut in interest rates or solid plans to buy more European government bonds, which could lower borrowing costs for troubled countries like Spain and Italy.

But Germany's central bank, which has footed much of the bill for bailing out other European countries, declined to go along. And so Draghi on Thursday had to tell a highly anticipated news conference that the ECB "may" intervene in the bond market. He promised the ECB would consider other emergency measures in coming weeks.

The yield, or interest rate, on Spain's benchmark 10-year bond jumped to 7.06 percent from 6.68 percent late Wednesday, making it more expensive for the country to borrow money. The yield on Italy's 10-year bond rose to 6.30 percent from 5.85 percent. Other countries have been forced to seek bailouts once their rates rose above 7 percent.

To be fair, the ECB faces a Herculean task. Whatever it does is sure to offend someone. Some of the weaker countries, like Greece, have lodged their own resistance to other ECB measures, such as demands for spending cuts meant to help countries achieve sustainable budgets.

It's also unrealistic for investors to expect quick fixes to a problem that was so long in the making, said Christian Bertelsen, chief investment officer of Global Financial Private Capital in Sarasota, Fla.

In the U.S., he noted, there was a half-year lag between the Treasury Department announcing it would buy stakes directly in banks in the fall of 2008 and investors becoming comfortable by the spring of 2009 that there wouldn't be uncontrollable bank failures.

"People look at Euroland and say, 'Why don't they get something done there?'" Bertelsen said. "How quickly they forget what a miserable six months it was here."

In the U.S., thoughts of Europe were close at hand. General Motors and Kellogg reported lower quarterly profits and put some of the blame on Europe.

    In other trading:

?Knight Capital Group, the trading firm whose technical glitch sent trading of dozens of stocks into chaos early Wednesday, lost 63 percent of its value, plunging $4.36 to $2.58. In two days, it has lost 75 percent of its value.

?Abercrombie & Fitch dropped 15 percent and Aeropostale dropped 33 percent after both companies warned of weak second-quarter sales. Abercrombie lost $4.96 to $29.06. Aeropostale lost $6.37 to $13.08.

?A smattering of positive signs about the economy got lost in the greater maelstrom. Retailers including Target, Limited Brands and Gap announced that July sales beat expectations. Shares of all three companies climbed, with the biggest increase at Gap. It rose 13 percent, gaining $3.75 to $33.17.

Are security awareness campaigns a waste of time? | E RADAR ...

I have just read a pungent US article titled ?Why you should not train employees for security awareness? . It has been codemned by the American equivalent of ?the usual suspects?. They defend awareness exercises while failing to address the core message. Indeed the article itself failed to follow through on its own argument: that awareness training is no substitute for mandating security by design in new systems, not just patching them after a penetration test has shown the vulnerabilities.

I get annoyed when I hear the mantra, ?80% of problems can be fixed by awareness?. It is blatantly untrue, unless ?awareness? includes that on the part of (for example) ?app? developers that they will themselves be held professionally accountable if they fail fail to follow good practice. That, in turn, require the IT industry to finally discover the concept of ?professional accountability?.

I recently heard of the efforts of a major organisation to train its development staff to routinely ensure that ?extraneous inputs? (my words not theirs) could not be used to enable hackers and malware to ?escape? (again I have simplified) from their ?apps? and exploit the 20 and 30 year old known vulnerabilities (e.g. to SQL injection) that are still commonplace on apps and devices being shipped this year. They had a very sensible and practical approach. What I found most interesting was that it was not only so necessary, but also so difficult, to mandate good practice in the light of current professional norms.

The STC chief programmer who ensured my systems followed his structured programming disciplines had no such difficulty. Before hand-over I had to put down 5 GBP. Any member of the department could put down 10 shillings and subject my work to the 1960s equivalent of a penetration test. If they succeeded I then had to cover a full round in the only pub in Basildon that would hold them all. Failure to secure the input and inter-operability routines, before the users got their hands on the system, could be very expensive.

I happen to also believe in the value of awareness exercises. I help run the Information Security Awareness Forum and have agreed to be an ambassador in support of the next Get Safe Online Campaign. One of the items for the next meeting of the Forum is a review of the current research on ?behaviour change? ? supposedly the objective of any awareness campaign. I will ask whether anyone is interested in helping organise an awareness campaign to change the behaviour of the app developers who condemn so many of us to be victimised, however many anti-malware products we install to slow down our systems as they fight each other for control while failing to protect us against well-targetted phishing.

I would very much like to see such an exercise under the umbrella of the new Digital Policy Alliance (website currently under construction) to implement the recommendations it inherits from the EURIM Security By Design Group.

Why Corporate Team Building Events Works For Business and May ...

A classic example of corporate team building at its greatest was Henry V at the Battle of Agincourt when he led the English army on an day? to France and used team building ideas to just take on the superior numbers of French soldiers. For many companies, the last few years are also a fight for survival and for some the war has yet to be acquired. Team building tips come in several forms but they mostly have one single concept whatever that and the team building exercise is to respect and value each member of a workforce. King Henry V is reported to have moved amongst his men the night time before the battle, never as a king but as a soldier, to hear his men?s genuine concerns about the time that lay ahead so that each morning he can place his archers more efficiently and choose the best words to rally his base soldiers.Corporate events and team building activities allow a specific amount of reinvention so that the players that might be pigeonholed by their roles at work will find new paths to display their abilities. Staff building games offer an chance for work colleagues to see each other in a fresh light, therefore establishing a new dynamic that may boost the efficiency of a business.Team building a few ideas whether it is an internal or outdoor exercise in the fantastic outdoors present new views into a class dynamic. It?s generally speaking considered that members of a team will often have abilities that address two, three or four of the roles and that there are about seven defined roles in most business groups. People believe well-worn roles similar to an in a soap opera and changing those roles and re-evaluating the skills that others can offer whist remaining within the confines of an office environment, usually shows quite difficult.Team building suggestions for work problem the managerial skills of resourceful people and the imagination of team managers. It is only by entering a completely ? new world ? that people at all levels in just a business can alter their way of thinking and learn more productive techniques when working with colleagues.Budget cuts, the credit squeeze, paid off return, may all seem to be good reasons for ignoring the apparent advantages of team work exercises. To the casual observer, it may look as if these actions are simply just a satisfying distraction from the day to day business mill, but do not include any real value to an organisation?s bottom line. For a mind to work on its ideal, the human body needs nutrition that will be how exactly we see team development activities. Fun, a sense of achievement and perhaps experiencing work colleagues in a new light are simply a really several benefits to be acquired by a business investing in such activities. The last couple of years for most or even all businesses have been pretty tough. The banking crisis may be over but the repercussions are still having an enormous effect on enterprises of most sizes. 2010 is proving to be always a pivotal year and as businesses come blinking into the sunlight of restoration, team development ideas for work are going to play a critical role. Many their staff has been minimized by establishments, frequently causing the fortunate few remaining in work stressed and overworked. New employees may be presented by the rescue in to your organisation and there is no better means of making a natural force than group activities. An away morning takes people out of these safe place and since everyone is facing the same clean difficulties, it allows newcomers to engage on equal terms in a broad choice of team building games.Of course, team building activities can also include the contribution of your clients, as working together with your people in a variety of team workouts can form the foundations of long standing business associations. These days, a lot of hours are spent by personnel hunched over notebooks, peering at iPhone displays and permanently pursuing Twitter tweets. An away day, without IT, that is used along with peers extending the body and working new muscles in the mind, will help forge new methods of working and new ways to solving business problems and job challenges. An away day steeped in team building ideas and projects will do miracles for both your employees? comfort and your main point here.
