Grandmother to face capital charge in girl's death
GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) ? A woman accused of running her 9-year-old granddaughter to death as punishment for eating chocolate was captured on a school bus videotape saying she planned to run the child "'til she can't run no more," a prosecutor told a judge Thursday in announcing capital murder charges.
Joyce Hardin Garrard, who faces a potential death penalty if convicted, made the threat as she yanked Savannah Hardin off a school bus that was equipped with a surveillance system, said Marcus Reid, an assistant district attorney in Etowah County.
Angered by a supposed lie the child told, Garrard told the driver: '"I gonna run her 'til she can't run no more,'" Reid said.
"That's exactly what she did," said the prosecutor, calling Garrard a "drill sergeant from hell."
Garrard, 46, and Savannah's stepmother, 27-year-old Jessica Mae Hardin, are both charged in the child's death last month. Authorities say the older woman made the child run for three hours as punishment, and the younger woman ? who was nine months pregnant at the time and has since given birth ? did nothing to intervene.
The defense contends neither woman did anything intentional to cause the child's death, which they blame on an unspecified medical problem. Court documents in an unrelated custody case show the child had health issues and made frequent trips to doctors.
Reid said after taking the child off the bus, Garrard forced Savannah to run and carry firewood until she collapsed in exhaustion in her yard. Autopsy photos show marks on the girl's arms from where the logs dug into her skin, Reid said, and a debris pile of limbs and large logs was visible outside the house the day after charges were filed against the women.
The child's father, Robert Hardin, sat behind the defense table during the hearing in apparent support of Garrard, his mother, and Hardin, his wife. Other relatives and friends sat around him, occasionally mouthing words to the two women.
District Judge William D. Russell did not immediately rule on a defense request to lower the women's bonds, now set at $500,000 cash each. State law doesn't law bond for capital defendants, and prosecutors said the might also upgrade charges against Hardin by next week to capital murder.
District Attorney Jimmie Harp said a grand jury that begins meeting Monday will likely consider the case.
Authorities say medics responding to a 911 call found the child having seizures at the family's mobile home Feb. 17. Her father, who was overseas working as a State Department contractor at the time, rushed home and made the decision to remove the girl from life support three days later.
Authorities said an autopsy revealed the girl was severely dehydrated and had extremely low sodium levels. They compared her condition to that of an athlete who ran a marathon without drinking any water.
When Reid called Garrard the "drill sergeant from hell" and pointed at her, Garrard's lawyer Dani Bone, who jumped up between Reid and Garrard, crossed his arms and yelled at Reid to quit pointing at the woman.
"That's inappropriate!" Bone said.
While Reid said Hardin spent time on her laptop and talking on a cellphone while her stepdaughter was forced to run, defense lawyers said the younger woman was busy caring for her 3-year-old son and didn't know what was happening. Defense attorney Morgan Cunningham said the woman went into labor while being questioned about Savannah's death and gave birth the day of her arrest.
Asking for the bond reduction, Cunningham said the woman needs time to be a mom.
"She needs to be able to bond with the newborn," he said.
Authorities said Hardin called 911 after the child collapsed.

'Idol' ladies split into contenders and pretenders

Recap: ?American Idol? went heavy on the cookie-cutter country-girl vibe this year in picking its top 12 girls, and the result was a whole lot of repetition on Wednesday night.
It seemed like every other singer who took the stage came from a quirky small town with farm animals and charming locals. We had a Hollie, a Hallie and a Haley all sing, and if you can tell off the top of your head which one was which, then you?re way ahead of most viewers. We even had two women, Jen Hirsh and Elise Testone, sing the same song (Adele?s ?One and Only?).
Fortunately, unlike the men the night before, the women separated themselves into contenders and pretenders. Skylar Laine, Shannon Magrane, Jessica Sanchez and Hollie Cavanagh are good bets to make the final 13. Hirsh, Testone, Hallie Day, Brielle Von Hugel and Erika Van Pelt are fighting for the remaining?two?or three?slots.
As for Chelsea Sorrell, Baylie Brown and Haley Johnsen ... well?... it doesn?t look good.
Sorrell was plagued by nerves in opening the show, and probably won?t get a second chance to prove she can catch her breath and sing at the same time. Soon afterward, Brown got the dreaded ?it wasn?t great, but you?re very pretty? feedback.?(Somewhere in Malibu, Paula Abdul is checking with her lawyers on whether those comments constitute trademark infringement.)
The struggles of those two led to a comment from J.Lo about how hard it is to sing in tight dresses, which caused Randy Jackson?to ask Ryan Seacrest how the host felt when he tried doing the same. Randy, Randy, Randy. Appreciate the effort, but it?s just not the same when it?s someone besides Simon Cowell making those kinds of jokes.
Johnsen did not have the painted-on dress excuse, as she simply tried and failed to channel Annie Lennox with "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)." ?It was a bit of a nightmare instead of a dream for me,? Randy said, later adding that it was ?a little trainwrecky.?
Those who emerged as the favorites weren?t taking any chances. Laine not only offered the most entertaining performance of the night, but also broke out the my-family-could-lose-its-store-if-I-don?t-win card. Sanchez complained that her vocal chords were swollen and she hadn?t really been able to rehearse.
Even those without sad stories played heavily on the emotions. Von Hugel talked about her mom and how much the other contestants like Mama Von Hugel ? well, at least the ones Mom didn?t slam for holding her daughter back in Hollywood. Testone noted that this was her last chance at stardom and that she needed the exposure. There was footage of Day waiting tables, and Van Pelt lugging around her mobile DJ gear. ?American Idol? contestants: They?re just like you and me!
And Magrane again brought her father, who said all was forgiven for Steven Tyler?s inappropriate comments about his daughter during auditions. But keep in mind that even though Mr. Magrane has been retired from baseball for years, he can still probably throw a ball at least 80 miles per hour, so the longer Shannon stays in the competition the more likely it is that Steven will say something else that her father doesn?t like, and the "Idol" judge will feel what it?s like to be hit by a Major League beanball.
On Thursday night, we?ll find out which six or seven of these women will survive to sing again next week. At least the thinning of the herd will make it easier for those remaining to stand out from the crowd.

Humongous prehistoric fleas fed on dinosaurs, couldn't jump
Scientists have found fossils of giant, ancient fleas in China. Their large size, five to ten times that of today's fleas, likely helped them to feed on dinosaurs. But they lacked the leg strength of today's fleas.
The oldest fleas were five to 10 times larger than today's bloodsuckers, new research finds. But at least they couldn't jump.

These early fleas lacked the strong hindlegs of modern fleas, Nel said.
"Their biology and behavior was certainly different, more like that of a louse creeping among the fur and feathers of the hosts," said Nel, who, along with his colleagues, analyzed nine fossil specimens of the fleas discovered in outcrops in China.
The fleas lived in the Mesozoic era, a chunk of geologic time extending from 250 million years ago to 65 million years ago and includes the Jurassic period. They were giant compared with today's fleas, with one female specimen's body longer than 0.8 inches (2 cm), said study researcher Diying Huang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Science in Nanjing, China. Modern fleas don't get much larger than 0.1 inches, or 3 mm, in length. [Album: The Cutest Bugs]
The fleas' size and tough mouthparts would have made it easy for them to feast on large hosts ? even dinosaurs.
"Their long siphonate dentate mouthparts may easily penetrate dinosaur skin," Huang told LiveScience.
The fossils, which reside in the collections of the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, fill in some of the gaps of flea evolution, Nel said. The first fleas evolved from ancestors that fed on plant fluids. Some then evolved from plants to animals, becoming bloodsuckers. These parasites lost their wings and developed grasping legs to cling to fur and feathers.
At some point still not pinpointed in the fossil record, Nel said, fleas evolved amazingly strong hind legs, which can catapult them 50 to 100 times their body length.
The Jurassic bloodsuckers are detailed Wednesday (Feb. 29) online in the journal Nature.

Reawakening neurons: Researchers find an epigenetic culprit in memory decline
ScienceDaily (Feb. 29, 2012) ? In a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease, memory problems stem from an overactive enzyme that shuts off genes related to neuron communication, a new study says.
When researchers genetically blocked the enzyme, called HDAC2, they 'reawakened' some of the neurons and restored the animals' cognitive function. The results, published February 29, 2012, in the journal Nature, suggest that drugs that inhibit this particular enzyme would make good treatments for some of the most devastating effects of the incurable neurodegenerative disease.
"It's going to be very important to develop selective chemical inhibitors against HDAC2," says Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator Li-Huei Tsai, whose team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology performed the experiments. "If we could delay the cognitive decline by a certain period of time, even six months or a year, that would be very significant."
In every cell, DNA wraps itself around proteins called histones. Chemical groups such as methyl and acetyl can bind to histones and affect DNA expression. HDAC2 is a histone deacetylase, an enzyme that removes acetyl groups from the histone, effectively turning off nearby genes.
In 2007, Tsai's group reported in Nature that this so-called epigenetic change can contribute to cognitive decline. They used a strain of mutant mice developed in her lab called CK-p25, which shows a profound loss of neurons and synapses, the junctions between neurons. The animals also carry the amyloid-beta plaques thought to cause Alzheimer's disease and show impaired learning and memory. When Tsai's team gave the mice drugs that block all HDACs, the animals sprouted more synapses and showed better memory function.
There are 19 known HDACs. In 2009, the researchers found that one of these, HDAC2, can cause a loss of synapses and memory function in normal mice.
The new study pulls from both of these previous findings, investigating HDAC2's affect on CK-p25 mice.
The researchers showed that the mutant animals have an elevated level of HDAC2 in two regions known to be affected in neurodegenerative disease: the hippocampus, important for learning and memory, and part of the temporal lobe called the entorhinal cortex. In these regions, the researchers also found that HDAC2 binds to a host of memory genes and dampens their expression.
Tsai's team then used a technique called RNA interference to silence the expression of HDAC2 in neurons in the hippocampus. Four weeks later, they found a dramatic increase in synaptic density. What's more, when given two different memory tests, the treated animals were indistinguishable from normal controls.
Blocking HDAC2 expression did not change the number of dying neurons. Still, the findings suggest that memory can be improved even in later stages of the disease, Tsai says.
"The neurons that are still alive are essentially zombies: they're not really functioning properly because of the epigenetic blockade," Tsai says. "What we're showing is that, if we can get some of those neurons to wake up, we can get cognitive function to recover to a certain extent."
Using hippocampal neurons grown in culture, Tsai also uncovered a potential mechanism that raises the level of HDAC2 in the first place. She showed that amyloid beta and oxidative stress -- both risk factors for Alzheimer's disease -- can activate a protein called the glucocorticoid receptor 1. This receptor, in turn, can switch on the runaway expression of HDAC2.
"The striking thing is that amyloid beta has a very, very acute effect in elevating HDAC2 expression, but then the consequences can be very long term," Tsai says. This mechanism could explain why clinical trials of drugs that clear out amyloid beta in people with Alzheimer's haven't worked very well, she says.
Finally, Tsai's team looked at postmortem brain tissue from people who died of Alzheimer's disease. These samples, like those in mice, had elevated levels of HDAC2 in the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex.
The clinical applications of this work are promising, Tsai says, but it's important not to oversell the findings. "While all the data look very promising in animal models, human studies are a completely different ball game," she says. "We need to do clinical trials to see whether this concept holds up."
