How infidelity helps nieces and nephews

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

A University of Utah study produced new mathematical support for a theory that explains why men in some cultures often feed and care for their sisters' children: where extramarital sex is common and accepted, a man's genes are more likely to be passed on by their sister's kids than by their wife's kids.

The theory previously was believed valid only if a man was likely to be the biological father of less than one in four of his wife's children ? a number that anthropologists found improbably low.

But in the new study, University of Utah anthropology Professor Alan Rogers shows mathematically that if certain assumptions in the theory are made less stringent and more realistic, that ratio changes from one in four to one in two, so the theory works more easily.

In other words, a man's genes are more likely to be passed by his sisters' children if fewer than half of his wife's kids are biologically his ? rather than the old requirement that he had to sire fewer than a quarter of his wife's kids, according to the study published online Nov. 28 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

"Imagine a mutation that encourages its bearers, if they are men, to be helpful and invest resources in the children of their sisters," Rogers says. "If that man lives in a society where most of his wife's children were fathered by other men, then this gene may not be in many of his wife's children. A man really doesn't know if any of his wife's kids were fathered by him, but he knows he and his sister have the same mom. So this gene may, in fact, be in more of his sisters' children."

"Thus, over time, the frequency of this gene increases because men are increasing the survival and fitness of their sisters' children ? the ones more likely to carry the gene," he adds.

The new study "shows that it is much easier than we thought for your niece to be a closer relative than your wife's daughter," Rogers says.

The research was funded by the University of Utah.

Why Men Help their Sisters' Kids: Theory and Debate

"Men invest in children in many ways; they care for them, feed them and leave them resources when the men die," Roger says. "But in some human societies, these are the children of sisters rather than those of wives. For decades, anthropologists have wondered why."

Extramarital mating is common in some cultures, including in central Africa and South America, he says, but not in the U.S. or other Western societies where infidelity, as prevalent as seems, much is less common by comparison.

"In some societies it is expected; it isn't seen as cheating," Rogers says. "And it isn't really just about promiscuity. Even where extramarital sex isn't common, women get divorced and remarried and have households with offspring from several men."

Rogers says: "In many societies where extramarital mating is the norm, men may not share genes with the children of wives. There is less doubt about relatedness to sisters' children. This suggests an interesting hypothesis: perhaps natural selection has shaped this practice, by encouraging males to direct investment toward genetic relatives."

"There was great enthusiasm for this idea during the 1970s, until a problem came to light," he continues. "Simple calculations suggested that the explanation collapses unless men father fewer than about one in four of their wife's children. Many have doubted that the number ? the paternity threshold number ? could really be this low."

Rogers' new study shows it is much easier than that for the idea to be true ? for natural selection to favor men who help their sisters' kids. He shows the theory holds true if men father fewer than half their wife's kids rather than fewer than one-quarter of those kids ? something much more likely to happen in reality.

The study shows this mathematically by relaxing assumptions previously made as part of the uncle-caretaker theory.

Rogers says it isn't enough to take into account the probability of paternity ? the odds that a child's biological father also is his mother's husband. The new study shows that if the assumptions made in old studies are relaxed, another parameter also must be measured: "the probability a brother and sister had the same biological father. The higher that probability, the more closely related a man is to his sister and his sister's kids."

Making Old Assumptions More Realistic

Rogers examined four assumptions made in previous studies and changed them to be more realistic. In this more realistic theory, men are more likely to share genes with their sister's children than under the old theory.

The first two assumptions of the existing theory were that "women are equally receptive to extramarital affairs and that each has an infinite number of paramours," says Rogers. "These assumptions both lower estimates of relatedness between men and the children of their sisters. Relaxing either assumption increases our estimate of the fitness payoff to men who invest in children of sisters."

[Rogers notes the theory applies to a man's sisters' children, but not to his brothers' children "because your brother has no more confidence than you do about the paternity of his wife's children. Sisters are a better bet, because they know who their kids are."]

"Previous calculations assume every woman in the population is equally promiscuous," Rogers says. "If you relax that assumption and instead assume some women are more promiscuous than others, it means men are more likely to share genes with their sisters' children."

"The earlier theory also assumed women each woman had an infinite number of boyfriends," instead of a range from one to infinity, he adds. "It made the math simple ? and it gave you a wrong answer."

The new study showed mathematically that a man's relatedness to his sister's kids increases if his wife has fewer rather than more extramarital partners and if she allocates sex ? and thus having children ? unevenly among them.

A third problem with previous studies is that they assumed resources given to any child were equally valuable. Rogers says that didn't account for the fact that giving your wife's kids twice as many resources isn't necessarily twice as good ? once the kids have what they need ? but may be only half again as good for them. So the man may be better off also giving resources to his sisters' kids.

"The old model didn't account for that, and because of that, it biased things in favor of the wife's children. When the nieces and nephews share fewer genes, they end up getting zero resources rather than some reduced share, as they should."

The fourth problem with most previous calculations was that they didn't account for a simple reality: "The best thing for a man to do depends on how his wife is going to respond," Rogers says. "If wives punish their husbands one way or another for delivering goods to their nieces and nephews, it's not just the husband deciding what is best for the husband. Women have an active role in all of these decisions and that role was ignored in the previous model."

Another study published recently took that into account, making it easier to understand how natural selection might favor men who invest in their sisters' offspring.

Rogers believes that natural selection and genetics ultimately contributes to people helping their relatives in most cultures, even if the primary motivation may be tax breaks for those who provide cash gifts to relatives rather than passing on one's genes.

"People are nice to relatives all over the world, and I think selection has something to do with that," he says.

MIDDLETON, Wis. (AP) ? Remember Roseanne Roseannadana? Or Emily Litella? Or Baba Wawa?

Younger generations might not recognize the characters popularized by comedian Gilda Radner. Nor might they remember Radner herself, an original cast member of "Saturday Night Live" who died 23 years ago and for whom a national cancer support group is named.

That's troubling to the Madison-area chapter of Gilda's Club, which decided to change its name in part because of concern that many don't know who Radner was. But the move prompted outrage from some Radner fans ? who saw it as a slight to a woman who confronted cancer with dignity and humor ? and led other chapters across the nation to hastily reaffirm they have absolutely no intention of changing their names.

Lannia Syren Stenz, the Madison-area club's executive director, said her organization decided to change its name to Cancer Support Community Southwest Wisconsin after it realized that most college students were born after Radner died in 1989.

"We are seeing younger and younger adults who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis," Stenz told the Wisconsin State Journal. "We want to make sure that what we are is clear to them and that there's not a lot of confusion that would cause people not to come in our doors."

Her comments angered some Radner fans, who let loose a storm of criticism on the organization's Facebook page.

"The only educating you're doing is teaching kids that when they die from cancer, their name will be erased from history in 20 years because the next generation doesn't know who they are. Way to give them hope!" wrote Mark Warneke, 44, a full-time college student in Arlington, Texas.

He told The Associated Press that taking Radner's name off the foundation was an insult to her memory.

Stenz referred questions from the AP to Linda House, executive vice president of the national group. House said there was no evidence that young people are unfamiliar with Radner and the name change was motivated by the desire to make the organization's mission clear. She called Stenz's comments "not accurate, period."

"Gilda Radner is very much a part of the fiber of this organization," House said. "There has never been an intent and there is no intent to lose Gilda as part of the organization."

Stenz's club held a ceremony Thursday to mark the name change, which will be phased it over the next month.

Radner, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1986, sought support from The Wellness Community in California and wrote about her experience in her book "It's Always Something," a reference to one of her characters' catch-phrases.

Her friends and family started Gilda's Club in 1991 on the East Coast to honor her legacy. The name was inspired by something Radner said after her diagnosis: "Having cancer gave me membership in an elite club I'd rather not belong to."

Gilda's Club Worldwide merged with The Wellness Community in 2009, and the joint headquarters in Washington changed its name to the Cancer Support Community. Local chapters were given the choice of keeping their names or switching to Cancer Support Community, House said.

The 56 chapters around the world deliver $40 million a year in free care to about 1 million cancer patients and their families, she said. Of those chapters, 20 are known as Gilda's Club, three are Wellness Community and 23 are Cancer Support Community.

Changing the chapters' names made sense to Ron Nief, a professor at Beloit College in southern Wisconsin who has made a career out of studying how different generations view the world differently. He said it could become harder for Gilda's Club to attract donations as fewer people remember seeing Radner on TV.

"I think we all want to keep our traditions alive," he said, "but there comes a reality in this case of what does this group represent and how do we raise money for it."

Radner's husband, actor Gene Wilder, said he didn't like the name change but he understood it. He said if he had to break the news to his late wife she might ask, "Do they have to throw me out?"

"I'd say, 'It's not throwing you out, honey, it's getting more money.' And she'd say, 'OK, I guess if they have to, they have to,'" he said. "It's too bad. I wish it weren't so. But I understand."

The Wellness Center where Radner once sought support in Los Angeles was one of the groups that updated its name. Julia Forth, the marketing director of what's now called the Cancer Support Community Benjamin Center, said people who get sick Google the word cancer, so it helps to have that word in the name.

Other organizations were adamant about keeping the Gilda's Club name. LauraJane Hyde, who runs the Chicago chapter, said her group has spent 15 years teaching people that Radner's name was synonymous with cancer support, in the same way people know what Starbucks sells even though "coffee" isn't in its name.

"A lot of people feel very passionately about the name," she said. "We will lose donations if we change it."

Radner remains a strong presence at the Madison-area club even without her name on the building in the suburb of Middleton. Paintings and drawings of Radner line the walls. One depicts her on top of Madison's state Capitol. Another imagines her sitting along the shores of Lake Mendota on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

The meeting rooms are named after her Saturday Night Live characters, including New York-street smart reporter Roseanne Roseannadana, out-of-sync editorialist Emily Litella and speech-impeded talk show host Baba Wawa, a parody of Barbara Walters.

Zebra, mini horse corralled after NYC street jaunt

(AP) ? New York City can be like a zoo sometimes, but a zebra running wild through the streets is not something you ordinarily see.

The Staten Island Advance reports (http://bit.ly/Yr7soL) a zebra and a miniature horse were spotted trotting through a shopping center parking lot Wednesday morning in Staten Island.

Metropolitan Drape & Blind owner Zachary Osher saw the runaway equines and shared his video with the newspaper. He says the animals ran down a street and narrowly escaped being hit by a car. He says two men in dark suits ran after them with lassoes.

A police spokesman says the animals were corralled and returned to a petting zoo.

(AP) ? Britain's unruly newspapers should be regulated by an independent body dominated by non-journalists with the power to levy steep fines, a judge said Thursday in a report that pleased victims of tabloid intrusion but left editors worrying about creeping state control of the country's fiercely independent press.

Prime Minister David Cameron echoed concerns about government interference, expressing misgivings about a key recommendation of the report ? that the new regulator be enshrined in law. He called on the much criticized press to show it could control itself by implementing the judge's proposals quickly ? and without political involvement.

"I'm proud of the fact that we've managed to survive hundreds of years without state regulation," he said.

Lord Justice Brian Leveson issued his 2,000-page report at the end of a media ethics inquiry triggered by a scandal over tabloid phone hacking that expanded to engulf senior figures in politics, the police and Rupert Murdoch's media empire.

His key recommendation was to create a new print media regulator, which he said should be established in law to prevent more people being hurt by "outrageous" press behavior that had "wreaked havoc with the lives of innocent people whose rights and liberties have been disdained."

Cameron, under intense pressure from both sides of an issue that has divided his own Conservative Party, welcomed Leveson's proposal for a new regulator and said "the status quo is not an option."

But he said that asking legislators to enshrine it in law meant "crossing the Rubicon of writing elements of press regulation into the law of the land."

"I believe that we should be wary of any legislation that has the potential to infringe free speech and a free press," Cameron told lawmakers in the House of Commons. "In this House which has been a bulwark of democracy for centuries, we should think very, very carefully before crossing this line."

Leveson insisted that politicians and the government should play no role in regulating the press, which should be done by a new body with much stronger powers than the current Press Complaints Commission.

But the judge said it was "essential that there should be legislation to underpin the independent self-regulatory system."

He said the new body should be composed of members of the public including former journalists and academics ? but no more than one serving editor, and no politicians. It should have the power to rule on complaints, demand prominent corrections in newspapers and to levy fines of up to 1 million pounds ($1.6 million), though it would have no power to prevent material being published.

Membership would be voluntary, but newspapers would be encouraged to join in part to stave off expensive lawsuits ? the regulator would handle complaints that currently end up in court.

The proposal is similar to the system operating in Ireland, where a press council and ombudsman were set up in 2008 to make the print media more publicly accountable.

Critics of the tabloid press generally backed Leveson's findings.

"I welcome Lord Leveson's report and hope it will mark the start of a new era for our press in which it treats those in the news responsibly, with care and consideration," said Kate McCann, who was the subject of intense press interest after her 3-year-old daughter Madeleine disappeared during a holiday in Portugal in 2007.

Brian Cathcart of the group Hacked Off, which campaigns for victims of press intrusion, said Leveson had produced "a workable, proportionate and reasonable solution to the problems of press abuse."

He said Cameron's "failure to accept the full recommendations of the report is unfortunate and regrettable."

Cameron set up the Leveson inquiry after revelations of illegal eavesdropping by Rupert Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World tabloid sparked a criminal investigation and a wave of public revulsion.

The furor erupted in 2011 when it was revealed that the News of the World had eavesdropped on the mobile phone voicemails of slain schoolgirl Milly Dowler while police were searching for the 13-year-old.

Murdoch shut down the 168-year-old newspaper in July 2011. His U.K. newspaper company, News International, has paid millions in damages to dozens of hacking victims, and faces dozens more lawsuits from celebrities, politicians, athletes and crime victims whose voicemails were hacked in the paper's quest for scoops.

News International chief executive Tom Mockridge said the company was "keen to play our full part, with others in our industry, in creating a new body that commands the confidence of the public."

"We believe that this can be achieved without statutory regulation ? and welcome the prime minister's rejection of that proposal."

Leveson's 4 million pound ($6.4 million) inquiry heard evidence from more than 300 witnesses during months of hearings that provided a dramatic, sometimes comic and often poignant window on the workings of the media. Witnesses ranged from celebrities such as Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and Hugh Grant ? who both complained of intrusive treatment ? to the parents of Dowler, who described how learning that their daughter's voicemail had been accessed had given them false hope that she was alive.

Leveson said that the ongoing criminal investigation constrained him from accusing other newspapers of illegal behavior, but concluded there was a subculture of unethical behavior "within some parts of some titles."

While many editors have denied knowing about phone hacking, Leveson said it "was far more than a covert, secret activity, known to nobody save one or two practitioners of the 'dark arts.'"

He said newspapers had been guilty of "recklessness in prioritizing sensational stories almost irrespective of the harm the stories may cause."

"In each case, the impact has been real and, in some cases, devastating," the judge said.

The hacking scandal has rocked Britain's press, political and police establishments, who were revealed to enjoy an often cozy relationship in which drinks, dinners and sometimes money were traded for influence and information.

Several senior police officers resigned over the failure aggressively to pursue an investigation of phone hacking at the News of the World in 2007. But Leveson said that "the inquiry has not unearthed extensive evidence of police corruption."

Leveson said over the past three decades, political parties "have had or developed too close a relationship with the press in a way which has not been in the public interest."

Those relationships reached right up to the prime minister's door. Former Murdoch editors and journalists charged with phone hacking, police bribery or other wrongdoing include Cameron's former spokesman, Andy Coulson, and ex-News of the World editor Rebekah Brooks, a friend of the prime minister.

Leveson acquitted senior politicians of wrongdoing, but recommended that political parties publish statements "setting out, for the public, an explanation of the approach they propose to take as a matter of party policy in conducting relationships with the press."

Cameron, who is tainted by his own ties to prominent figures in the scandal, said he accepted that proposal.

But politicians remained far apart on the broader issue of how, or whether, to regulate the press.

Cameron was holding talks Thursday with leaders of the other main parties in an attempt to thrash out agreement.

He faced a battle. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, leader of junior government partner the Liberal Democrats, differed from Cameron in backing the call for a new regulator established in law.

"We owe it to the victims of these scandals, who have already waited too long for us to do the right thing," he said.

Analysts say that it was possible for the coalition government's two parties to join forces and push through a version of the recommended legal changes.

But Steven Barnett, a communications professor at the University of Westminster, said that if that does not happen, he would not trust the British press to set up a truly independent regulator.

"One possibility is that in the end (the report) has no effect whatsoever," Barnett said. "The press can make some noises about regulating themselves. But in the end they will want to control themselves in ways that Leveson himself said was unacceptable."

Implantable silk optics multi-task in body: Dissolvable micro-mirrors enhance imaging, administer heat, deliver and monitor drugs

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Tufts University School of Engineering researchers have demonstrated silk-based implantable optics that offer significant improvement in tissue imaging while simultaneously enabling photo thermal therapy, administering drugs and monitoring drug delivery. The devices also lend themselves to a variety of other biomedical functions.

Biodegradable and biocompatible, these tiny mirror-like devices dissolve harmlessly at predetermined rates and require no surgery to remove them.

The technology is the brainchild of a research team led by Fiorenzo Omenetto, Frank C. Doble Professor of Engineering at Tufts. For several years, Omenetto; David L. Kaplan, Stern Family Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering chair, and their colleagues have been exploring ways to leverage silk's optical capabilities with its capacity as a resilient, biofriendly material that can stabilize materials while maintaining their biochemical functionality.

The technology is described in the paper "Implantable Multifunctional Bioresorbable Optics," published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences online Early Edition the week of November 12, 2012.

"This work showcases the potential of silk to bring together form and function. In this case an implantable optical form -- the mirror -- can go beyond imaging to serve multiple biomedical functions," Omenetto says.

Turning Silk into Mirrors

To create the optical devices, the Tufts bioengineers poured a purified silk protein solution into molds of multiple micro-sized prism reflectors, or microprism arrays (MPAs). They pre-determined the rates at which the devices would dissolve in the body by regulating the water content of the solution during processing. The cast solution was then air dried to form solid silk films in the form of the mold. The resulting silk sheets were much like the reflective tape found on safety garments or on traffic signs.

When implanted, these MPAs reflected back photons that are ordinarily lost with reflection-based imaging technologies, thereby enhancing imaging, even in deep tissue.

The researchers tested the devices using solid and liquid "phantoms" (materials that mimic the scattering that occurs when light passes through human tissue). The tiny mirror-like devices reflected substantially stronger optical signals than implanted silk films that had not been formed as MPAs.

The Tufts researchers also demonstrated the silk mirrors' potential to administer therapeutic treatments.

In one experiment, the researchers mixed gold nanoparticles in the silk protein solution before casting the MPAs. They then implanted the gold-silk mirror under the skin of mice. When illuminated with green laser light, the nanoparticles converted light to heat. Similar in-vitro experiments showed that the devices inhibited bacterial growth while maintaining optical performance.

The team also embedded the cancer-fighting drug doxorubicin in the MPAs. The embedded drug remained active even at high temperatures (60 degree C), underscoring the ability of silk to stabilize chemical and biological dopants.

When exposed to enzymes in vitro, the doxorubicin was released as the mirror gradually dissolved. The amount of reflected light decreased as the mirror degraded, allowing the researchers to accurately assess the rate of drug delivery.

"The important implication here is that using a single biofriendly, resorbable device one could image a site of interest, such as a tumor, apply therapy as needed and then monitor the progress of the therapy," says Omenetto.

jazz: What Your Emergency Survival Kits Should Contain | Travel ...

Emergency survival kits are just that they are kits that will help you get through a real emergency. A survival situation is the balance between life and death. There are so many situations where you would need a survival kit.

You can put together or purchase a kit for the home, the car and outdoors. Every home in America should have at least one survival kit for every member of the house. The last decade has seen some of the worst violence in American history.

The last decade has also seen some of the worst storms in all of history. Having a survival kit is not a luxury it is without a doubt a necessity. The Federal government even recommends that every home should have an emergency kit for every member of the household.

For the Home Family of Four

Each emergency kit should contain at least:

Three days of water Three days of food Medical supplies Important documents (at least copies) Can opener portable radio flashlight candle lighter city map portable car charger for cell phones

To effectively survive any disaster natural or man made the above items need to be present and ready for use. You can either put together this kit yourself or you can buy one. You want to be sure to have enough food and water to last at least three days.

Medical supplies should be a freshly stocked first aid kit and if any family member is diabetic or needs other life saving treatment/medication than that should also be present (rotate frequently to insure freshness).

Keep copies of all your important documents in the kit. Things like birth certificates, insurance policies for the home and the car and any other documents that may be hard to replace in a time of crisis.

A can opener ( you would be surprised how many people forget this) so you can open canned goods. A portable battery operated radio so that you can get news from the outside world is also important. Flashlights so that you can see should the power go out, candles for the same reason.

Make sure you have a lighter they are more reliable than matches. A map of your neighborhood or city so you know exit routes. Portable car charger for cell phones.

A good investment is a solar hank cranked lantern and radio just in case the emergency lasts longer and you run out of batteries.

Keep some cash and some change stashed in your kit. If the power goes down so does the ATM?s bank?s and other places that you can get money. Remember when the power goes down there is no place to ge gasoline either.

Any good survival kit will be compact enough to move around yet stacked enough with the gear that you and your family will need to make it through the crisis. A lot of families by one kit for each member although it is not necessary.

Hope for the Best Plan for the Worst

It is always best to plan ahead just in case. There were so many families that lost their basic ability to feed their families during some of the awful storms mother nature threw at them. Many times these storms struck in the dead of the night without warning.

Hundreds and in some cases thousands of people were killed or died after the fact. A little planning can go a really long way in surviving it does not take long to put a kit together and to purchase one is relatively inexpensive.

It is worth the peace of mind to be prepared.

For the Individual

If you are an outdoors person and journey into the woods, out on the ocean or anywhere that takes you away from the population and emergency kit should be a part of your planning as well. In the event you never use the items in your emergency kit that is perfect but if you need the items it is nice to know that they are there!

The same items for the home can be used in your outdoor survival kit just scale it down to make it easy to carry!

Paul is a long-time survivalist and writer. He?s always been prepared and now tries to get his family and friends prepared as well. You can read more about this topic and find survival gear at this website.

The Best Guide When It Comes To Internet Promotion | Cop 15 Post

Certain enterprises are destined to grow into giants, and some are meant to stay small. The vast majority; however, will simply dissipate. A majority of new businesses will fail, and that rate can be even higher for online businesses. This article includes some top web marketing tips to help your business avoid a similar fate.

TIP! You should include a chat section for customers on your website. Allowing your customers the ability to communicate with each other on your site makes them enjoy visiting you more.

Everything you say about your products or services should be true. If you can prove the effectiveness of your product through videos or testimonials, your customers will be more apt to believe in your products and services. This illustrates why you need to sell any products you have used if possible.

Provide customers with a time-sensitive incentive to place an order. Consider waiving the shipping costs on the first thousand orders you send out, or giving customers free gift-wrapping if they get their order in a certain number of days before Christmas. But it is important that urgency is created to get the people to act right away.

TIP! Most mobile phone companies let you add a dedicated work number to your existing phone. Considering this, you should get a dedicated number for your business.

Use captions under images. Captions play a big role with regards to SEO. Giving all of your images appropriate, descriptive captions can make a noticeable difference in your search engine results page standing.

Use your advertising campaign to make a personal connection with your potential customers. Make sure your website has a picture of you, and include your name throughout your advertising. Another good idea is to create a handwritten sales letter to your visitors.

TIP! Although there are companies that can handle all of your email marketing needs for you, it?s well worth the effort it takes to learn the basics for yourself. Once you understand how the process works, it becomes simple to use bulk mailing lists, auto responders and mass mailers.

If you really want to increase the traffic to your site, make sure that you?re advertising your site on other popular websites. This can really help get your name out there and is worth the initial investment in the long run. For the most bang for your buck, choose a page with plenty of traffic so that as many people as possible see your company name.

Put serious thought into your site tags since they define your business to the world. The title tag shows at the top left corner of the browser window. The text there conveys exactly who you are to the potential viewer. If you use an inaccurate tag, or waste that space with something meaningless, people could leave your site, or not click on it in the first place.

TIP! Follow up with your clients by cross-selling, advising them of other similar merchandise that you offer that they might be interested in, via an email with links to online catalogs or sales sheets. For example, if your customers purchased cookbooks from your book website, send them an email with links to the other cookbooks that you offer.

Deciding upon a specific direction and purpose for your website can be quite intimidating. Make a list of interests and continue to narrow the list down until you have made a decision. You should pick a website niche that you are familiar with and that you also enjoy. Once you have a solid goal for the content of your website, it is easier to achieve marketing goals.

Give people a reason to come back to your site: you could for instance advertise new limited offers every week. The only thing better than a customer is a repeat customer. It?s very important that you keep people coming back again and again. If you can be generous, you can build up your list of repeat customers. When customers feel appreciated, they pass the information about your business to new potential customers.

Online business failure can open many doors for you as an entrepreneur. Use these tips to do your best with Online marketing.

Dez Duron, Cody Belew depart 'The Voice'

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

While "The Voice" manages to make the dreams of its winner come true, not everyone can make the cut. Fortunately, Dez Duron and Cody Belew (who were let go Tuesday night) are determined to see their glasses as half-full.

Belew had tried making a go of it in Nashville before stepping on to "Voice," and as he told TODAY's Natalie Morales, "With all of this happening now I hope that I can go back (to Nashville) with a different perspective, and maybe some doors will open that were closed previously."

Meanwhile, Duron had dropped out of Yale to pursue his music -- and has no intentions of going back there just yet. "I'm really excited to make my own music, so that's what I'm really looking forward to in these next few days, months -- making new music and getting the music I've already made out there."

Maybe both of them can take a cue from former "Voice" finalist Chris Mann, who proved with a TODAY performance Wednesday he was still one to keep an eye on.

The final six competitors will next appear on "The Voice" on Monday, Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. on NBC.

Business Cards Give Way to Cellphone Apps for Networking | Talk ...

The business card has long since left the realm of the office Rolodex and entered the world of the Web.

Business acquaintances and meeting attendees now transmit contact information between cellphones, and Web sites and mobile apps can connect that information to social and business networks.

Sandy Avvari, a digital and social media analyst at a Canadian automotive manufacturer, said she met about 15 people a week in her job but exchanged paper business cards only about 20 percent of the time. ?We?re much more likely to exchange Twitter handles or connect to each other on LinkedIn,? she said.

Ms. Avvari said she used CardMunch, a free app, to take a photograph of a business card and send it to a service that transcribes the information and adds it to her phone?s address book. CardMunch is owned by LinkedIn, and so if the person is a member, a photo and basic profile of the business card?s owner appear on Ms. Avvari?s phone, allowing her to connect with the person on that service.

Attaching a LinkedIn profile to the business card ?makes the contact dynamic, showing job changes or new phone numbers when they happen,? Ms. Avvari said. ?It becomes more than a static piece of paper or address book entry.?

With the free app Bump, users can bump or tap their phones together to share contact information. The phones vibrate when they, or the hands holding them, make contact, and information is exchanged between the users? address books.

If both users are signed into Facebook or LinkedIn, a list of acquaintances they have in common on those sites and in their address books will be displayed. Users can also transmit a photo, for example, of a product they sell if they are meeting at a trade show. Once two people have exchanged data, they can stay in touch using a messaging feature in the app. Bump works across platforms on Android and Apple devices.

With so many contacts flooding into business travelers? address books, the details of how they met, what they talked about or why someone may be a good contact in the future can fade. Apps like Contacts Journal ($7.99 for iOS, or a free trial version) help users keep track of interactions. Documents like contracts or brochures can be attached to contact information, and users can see a map with pushpins denoting their contacts? locations.

Many networking apps go beyond electronic business card exchanges and mobile contact databases. LinkedIn is the largest player in the business networking market, with more than 187 million members around the world. In addition to displaying their r?sum?s online, LinkedIn members ?connect? to people they know on the service, creating a virtual who-knows-whom map. Job seekers can look for a specific hiring manager and see if they have any connections in common. An employer evaluating a job candidate can get a trusted reference from someone they both know.

The basic functions of LinkedIn are free for individual users. For a monthly fee ranging from $16 to $500, users can gain access to additional search features and contact other members directly without waiting for an electronic introduction.

To network while on a business trip, travelers can use the free Planely Web site to type in their flight itineraries and see who else is traveling at the same time, with overlapping flight plans. Conference- or conventiongoers might find other attendees to share a taxi to the hotel, for instance. Nervous fliers might find someone to take their mind off a long or bumpy flight. The app lists all the Planely travelers on the user?s flight and those who are passing through the airport at the same time, to create a ?social flying experience.?

Some networking apps use the phone owner?s location. The Friendthem app works with Facebook, displaying all members who are nearby and have signed up to be visible. This allows two people who meet at a conference, or perhaps at a hotel bar, to become Facebook friends easily, without having to search through a list of similar names to find the right person.

Friend requests can be sent to people who appear nearby, but no instant messaging is available because ?our users don?t want creepy people sending them messages like, ?I see you across the room,? ? said Charles Sankowich, chief executive and founder of Friendthem. ?We want our users to have total control of who communicates with them.? Friendthem also allows users to specify ?hiding places,? like home or work, where they want to be invisible.

At home or on the road, the MeetMe app can offer two people convenient locations to meet. Users can choose the type of restaurant they want and use a slider bar to specify whether the meeting place should be equidistant from the two people or closer to one of them. The app also displays user reviews of meeting places and information from Yelp.com, along with directions.

There are, of course, downsides to the constant tracking of business colleagues. Networking apps make it harder to excuse not getting in touch with people by claiming you lost their card or did not know they had changed jobs. ?The location-aware apps can also be tricky,? said James Sun, chief executive of Pirq, a mobile app developer in Seattle, ?because once someone knows you are in the area, can you avoid having coffee with them??

And the convenience and abundance of digital contact can be overwhelming, said David Domke, a communications professor at the University of Washington. People can become almost numb to the constant stream of data. ?That?s why face to face, human interaction between people has become even more valuable in the digital age,? he said.

Still, users say social media can make initial business meetings less awkward. When she was applying for her current job, Ms. Avvari found the hiring manager?s Twitter stream and noticed they shared a love of baked goods. During the interview, Ms. Avvari brought up her own passion for food and her food blog, which she might not have mentioned otherwise, and the two hit it off.

?Whether it?s an employer or customer, I think few people realize how valuable researching them on social media can be for business,? she said.

Twitter also offers in-person networking on the road. At conferences, there might be a Twitter hashtag, Ms. Avvari said, like #CIAS for the Canadian International Auto Show, so attendees can see one another?s posts. ?Sometimes I?ll see a funny or interesting tweet and ask to meet that person for coffee during one of the breaks,? she said.

Krista Canfield, a spokeswoman for LinkedIn, said she used the site to meet people when she traveled for her job. ?If I am going to Japan or Brazil and I don?t know anyone,? she said, ?I try to connect with people who know someone in my network and meet them for a meal, instead of eating alone.?

DocScanner, an app that has over 1.5 million downloads on the iOS platform, has just launched onto Android. The basic idea behind these types of apps is simple -- scan pretty much any type of document, business card or receipt and you now have a digital copy of it. Nowadays we don't want to deal with paper more than we have to, and if there's a simple way to manage it electronically we'll take it.

DocScanner S is now available for free in the Google Play Store at the link above. There's also a paid version for $3 if you are so inclined.

Egypt minister says end of crisis 'imminent'

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's justice minister says a resolution is imminent to the political crisis stemming from the president's move to give himself sweeping new powers.

Ahmed Mekki spoke to reporters Monday, hours before President Mohammed Morsi was due to meet members of the Supreme Judiciary Council to discuss the package of decrees announced Thursday. Morsi's move put him above any kind of oversight, including that of the courts. The judiciary council is in charge of the courts.

Mekki has been mediating between the judiciary and the presidency to defuse the crisis, although he did not say on what he based his prediction for its imminent resolution.

The opposition denounced the decrees as dictatorial, and vowed to press on with street protests until Morsi rescinds them.

Further Deregulation Could Vastly Improve US Air Travel - Business ...

THE deregulation of American air travel was a near-unqualified success for cost-conscious travellers, who can now fly across the country far more cheaply than in the era of heavy regulation. There are more flights and they cost less. But deregulation was never completed. Even today, foreign carriers are forbidden from competing with American airlines in the domestic market.?

Clifford Winston, a scholar at the centrist Brookings Institution in Washington, took on this subject in a recent New York Times op-ed. American airlines are taking advantage of reduced competition to cut capacity and raise prices, Mr Winston argues:

Unfortunately for travellers, this situation is unlikely to change anytime soon. With five airlines now serving 85% of the domestic market?four, if American Airlines and US Airways merge, as industry analysts expect?the major carriers are worrying less about the one factor that could disrupt their cosy, cram-?em-in strategy: competition.

That is, unless policy makers do what they should have done a long time ago and allow foreign airlines, including discount carriers like?Ryanair?and global players like?Qantas and?British Airways, to serve domestic routes in the United States. Why, after all, should an industry that has ingeniously used free-market principles to squeeze the most revenue out of each middle seat be protected from competing in a real free market?

As things stand now, the United States allows foreign airlines to serve its major cities as part of international agreements?conventions that have been around for decades. Foreign airlines have never posed a threat to national security or to the safety of air travellers; there?s no indication that such carriers have resisted American security measures in the past or any reason to think they?d violate any protocols required for domestic routes either.

As Mr Winston notes later in his op-ed, America's domestic airlines are likely to oppose the opening up of the country's market to foreign competition. Given the airlines' pull with both parties in Congress?and the fact that airline labour unions would probably oppose this move, too?it's unlikely that you'll be able to take British Airways from LaGuardia to Minneapolis anytime soon. But in the meantime, Mr Winston offers a plausible half-measure that could partially open the American air travel market without drawing too much fire from the domestic airlines. Instead of letting foreign airlines in fully (a pipe dream anyway), he writes, America could limit them to mid-size and regional airports that have "lost service in the past few years". That looks like a win-win: small and mid-size American cities get new flights, consumers get more competition, and foreign carriers get a foothold in the American market. It's an idea worth taking seriously.
